Profession - Environment and their Impacts

An environmental practitioner typically works across the organisation at all levels of operations and management to deliver environmental improvements and cost savings.
There are many job titles and roles, but a skilled and qualified environment professional;
  • identifies and measure areas where a company can reduce its environmental impact
  • delivers environmental improvements
  • ensures that the organisation is complying with environmental regulations
  • reports on its performance and making recommendations
As environment professionals move towards the top of the profession (some of whom will be Chartered Environmentalists) they increasingly take responsibility for developing and implementing their organisation’s business strategy with environment at the heart of decision-making. In leadership roles they innovate, envision and transform the whole organisation towards a sustainable future. See IEMA's Skills Map for more information on these levels of experience and knowledge.
At the operational level environment professionals make a difference by using their knowledge and skills to ensure that their company continues to comply with environmental regulations and develop programmes to deliver environmental performance improvement. There are those who specialise in assessing and managing the environmental impacts of commercial and community development projects.
There is a variety of interesting and rewarding careers that involve the specialist management and protection of the earth’s land, air and water resources which require expertise in areas such as: ecology, energy, sustainability, legal compliance, waste, resource management, life cycle assessment, biodiversity, impact assessment, auditing and risk management.
The skills and training required to become an environmental practitioner vary according to specialism. Graduates and career changers should expect to develop their knowledge and skills through a combination of qualifications, training, continuous professional development and involvement through networking, conferences, workshops and reading throughout their whole career. IEMA leads the way in providing the support and access to this for our 15,000 members, who are environmental practitioners, and is dedicated to a sustainable future through environmental skills, knowledge and thought leadership.
Environment roles are rapidly emerging and evolving as the environment becomes part of the fabric of strategic decision making in organisations. This offers a wealth of opportunities for those with a passion about creating a sustainable future.

Profession - Belief and Values

All professions have power. This power is used to control its own members, and also its area of expertise and interests. A profession tends to dominate, police and protect its area of expertise and the conduct of its members, and exercises a dominating influence over its entire field which means that professions can act monopolist, rebuffing competition from ancillary trades and occupations, as well as subordinating and controlling lesser but related trades. A profession is characterized by the power and high prestige it has in society as a whole. It is the power, prestige and value that society confers upon a profession that more clearly defines it. The power of professions has led to them being referred to as conspiracies against the laity. On the other hand, professionals acquire some of their power and authority in organizations from their expertise and knowledge. As such they can bend rules, reduce bureaucratic inertia and increase problem solving and adaptability.

Social Attitudes of a Profession

Professions enjoy a high social status, regard and esteem conferred upon them by society. This high esteem arises primarily from the higher social function of their work, which is regarded as vital to society as a whole and thus of having a special and valuable nature. All professions involve technical, specialised and highly skilled work often referred to as "professional expertise." Training for this work involves obtaining degrees and professional qualifications (see Licensure) without which entry to the profession is barred (occupational closure). Training also requires regular updating of skills through continuing education.

Core Qualities of a Professional

Professionalism is a word embraced by many, but in all honesty demonstrated by far fewer individuals. Its Latin’s origins come from the word profess which means, “to avow before.” So the question is who are these individuals that believe themselves to be true professionals avowing before? Possibly the answer may be found within the word professional.
P – Positively proactive. Professionals demonstrate behaviors that are positive, proactive instead of negative, and reactive.
R – Respect. Through this ethic and value of respect, professionals are known and trusted within and without their respective organizations.
O – Opportunities to help others. Those who avow before understand they have a responsibility to help others whether it is to grow self-leadership skills or provide some expert advice.
F – Follow-up. No one likes to wait for un-returned phone calls or emails. Professionals make it a habit to follow-up on everything and accept responsibility when they fail to engage in that behavior.
E – Empathy. Professionals know how to be empathetic. This characteristic is a one of the signs of high emotional intelligence and a predictor for leadership success.
S – Self-confident. When individuals are self confident, they do not have to put others down at their own expense. These individuals have a high sense of balanced self-esteem and role awareness.
S – Sustainable. Professionals are truly sustainable in that they can continue forward when times become difficult. Their ethics and beliefs keep them focused.
I – Integrity. Integrity is putting your values into action; doing the right thing when no one else is looking without personal gain or benefit; and accepting a potential personal cost.
O – Optimize all interactions. This is critical because professionals do not negate the value of people. They look to see how one interaction can benefit someone else even before himself or herself.
N – Nimble. Being flexible and open to change allows these individuals to be quick on their feet and nimble to the opportunities that they encounter on a daily basis.
A – Awareness. Having a high level of awareness of themselves, the marketplace, the community and even the world helps these individuals continually stay on top of things.
L – Leadership. Last, but not least, professionals demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and even more importantly self-leadership skill. For if you cannot lead yourself, you cannot lead others.

Who is a Professional?

A profession has two fundamental cores: (1) the art practiced is helpful to others; and (2) the persons so engaged in that art govern the practice in a way that is primarily for the public good.

What is a Profession?

A profession is a vocation founded upon specialized educational training, the purpose of which is to supply objective counsel and service to others, for a direct and definite compensation, wholly apart from expectation of other business gain. The term is in essence a rather vaguer version of the term "liberal profession", an anglicisation of the French term "profession libĂ©rale". Originally borrowed by English users in the nineteenth century, it has been re-borrowed by international users from the late twentieth, though the (upper-middle) class overtones of the term do not seem to survive retranslation: “liberal professions” are, according to the Directive on Recognition of Professional Qualifications (2005/36/EC) “those practised on the basis of relevant professional qualifications in a personal, responsible and professionally independent capacity by those providing intellectual and conceptual services in the interest of the client and the public”.
